Male’ Mayoral By-Election Set for January 13 Following Muizzu’s Resignation

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has officially announced that a by-election will be conducted on January 13 to appoint the new Male’ City mayor.

 The vacancy arose following the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who assumed the role of the president.

Vice Chairperson of ECM, Ismail Habeeb disclosed that the candidacy window for the election will be open from November 28 to December 13.

In addition to the Male’ mayoral election, the ECM also outlined plans to conduct by-elections on January 13 for a position on V. Rakeedhoo Council and officials for women’s development committees in 18 islands.

Simultaneously, by-elections will be held to fill three vacant seats at the Male’ City Council. The vacancies emerged as councilors resigned to assume roles within the new administration.
