Man Arrested in Male’ City with Stolen Cigarette Cartons
A man was arrested in Male’ City for allegedly carrying dozens of stolen cigarette cartons, yesterday.
Ahmed Lujain, a 24-year-old resident of Hirundhumaage in Sh. Feydhoo, was apprehended by police officers conducting patrols near Olympus Cinema at approximately 5:40 am. The officers became suspicious of Lujain’s behaviour and stopped him for a search.
During the search, officers discovered 67 cigarette cartons in the bags he was carrying. Further investigation revealed that the cartons had been stolen from Ocean Nautical Pvt. Ltd.
Lujain appeared before the Criminal Court for a remand hearing on Sunday, where he was placed in police custody for five days. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This theft occurred shortly after the government announced a doubling of the import duty and ad valorem tax on cigarettes.
Teenager Arrested After Hitting Police Officer in Hulhumale’
A teenager was arrested in Hulhumale’ on Friday night after he allegedly ran over a police officer while attempting to evade a traffic stop.
The incident occurred around 10:42 PM when 18-year-old Ahmed Shaheen Shaheed, of Milkuraage, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, was reportedly speeding on his motorcycle along Reethigas Magu. Police directed him to stop, but he failed to comply and subsequently struck a police officer while fleeing the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that Shaheed has been charged with hitting a police officer, obstructing law enforcement, and attempting to evade arrest.
The police officer sustained injuries and was treated at a hospital before being discharged. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
