Man in Custody Attempts Suicide at Kulhudhuffushi Police Facility

A man held in police custody in Kulhudhuffushi City attempted to take his own life last night and is currently receiving treatment at the regional hospital.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the incident occurred at 21:12 last night at the Kulhudhuffushi City Police Custody. The man, identified as a 34-year-old Maldivian, had been arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of damaging house property while under the influence of alcohol.

Police said the matter was promptly reported to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC). A Major Crime Investigation team has been dispatched to Kulhudhuffushi to conduct a thorough inquiry.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the police stated that the Professional Standards Command is prioritising an internal review to examine the circumstances that led to the attempted suicide.
This incident comes nearly three years after a similar case in 2022, when Abubakar Faisal was accused of killing his wife in HDh. Nolhivaram died by suicide while in custody at the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Police Station.
