MATATO Calls for Immediate Action Against Fraudulent Website Exploiting Tourists
The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has raised concerns over a fraudulent website exploiting unsuspecting travellers to the Maldives.
The website https://www.maldives-entrymale.com/ is falsely impersonating the legitimate Maldives Immigration Traveller Declaration system, tricking users into paying for entry visas that are free upon arrival.
Reports from MATATO members indicate that several clients have fallen victim to this scam, leading to confusion and financial losses. Such activities not only harm individual travellers but also risk damaging the Maldives’ reputation as a transparent and welcoming destination for global tourists.
MATATO has urged the Ministry of Tourism to implement the following actions:
- Immediate Investigation: Collaborate with the Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service to identify and investigate the operators behind the website.
- Awareness Campaign: Issue public advisories to inform potential visitors and local stakeholders about the scam to prevent further victimisation.
- Legal Measures: Pursue the shutdown of the fraudulent website and ensure legal accountability for its operators.
As a key representative body for the tourism industry, MATATO has expressed its deep concern about the long-term consequences of such fraudulent activities. The organisation has pledged its full support to the Ministry and relevant authorities to combat the issue and uphold the integrity of Maldives tourism.
MATATO has called for swift action on this matter and remains available to provide additional details or assistance as needed.
