Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has expressed support for potential cooperation between the MDP and The Democrats, following comments by former President Mohamed Nasheed advocating for a united political front to address current governance challenges in the Maldives.
Nasheed, who served as President from 2008 to 2012 and led the MDP for nearly 15 years, made the proposal in a post on X, suggesting that unity between the two parties would best serve the country and its democratic future. His comments come amid growing speculation over the MDP’s next presidential primary and increased attention on the internal dynamics of the party.

Responding to Nasheed’s remarks, Fayyaz said the MDP is open to collaboration with The Democrats in any effort that supports constitutional governance and the protection of democratic values. He referenced a recent resolution passed by the MDP’s National Assembly, which called on all political parties and civil society organisations to work together in defence of the Constitution.
Fayyaz noted that Nasheed’s proposal had yet to outline a specific framework for cooperation, but reiterated that the MDP would welcome any initiative focused on addressing the current political and economic situation in the country. He clarified that discussions were not centred on forming a formal coalition or electoral alliance, particularly with the presidential election still some time away.
The MDP Chairman also stated that any member of The Democrats, including Nasheed himself, would be welcomed back into the party should they wish to return.
Nasheed’s influence within the MDP began to diminish following tensions with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, eventually leading to his departure and the establishment of the Democrats. The party was formed by Nasheed and his allies after his defeat in the MDP’s 2023 presidential primary and subsequent expulsion from the party over actions taken against the then MDP-led government.
Despite its initial momentum, The Democrats have struggled to gain significant electoral support and have yet to secure a seat in parliamentary elections. Several key figures involved in the party’s founding, including Hassan Latheef and Mohamed Shifaz, have since rejoined the MDP.
The current President of the Democrats, Imthiyaz Fahumee, who was elected in January, has publicly endorsed Nasheed’s call for unity. In a statement on social media, Imthiyaz welcomed Nasheed’s remarks and indicated support for greater cooperation between the two parties.
This renewed discussion of unity comes as internal competition intensifies within the MDP ahead of its upcoming presidential primary. Former President Solih is widely expected to seek the party’s nomination once again, while Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, and MP Ahmed Shamheed have all expressed interest in contesting the party’s presidential ticket.
Observers have noted that Nasheed’s proposal could represent a significant shift in the political landscape. If realised, an alliance between the MDP and The Democrats could reshape the opposition and offer a more consolidated platform in the run-up to future elections.
As the political climate continues to evolve, calls for unity are expected to play a central role in shaping party strategies and broader national discourse in the months ahead.
