The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted an emergency motion alleging unjust dismissals of Fenaka Corporation’s employees.
Central Fuvahmulah MP Hussain Mohamed presented the motion during today’s parliamentary session, condemning the current administration for allegedly dismissing Fenaka employees across the Maldives based on directives from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The motion raised concerns about what MDP members termed the “theft of jobs” by the current administration, a stark contrast to President Dr. Muizzu’s assurances before assuming office that no one would be dismissed from their jobs. Members urged the government to halt these dismissals.
In response, Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thariq defended the government, pointing out that Fenaka’s debt had significantly increased to MVR 3 billion under the previous administration, a notable contrast to the end of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) administration in 2018. Thariq clarified that employees labelled as “dismissed” were hired on a contractual basis for specific projects, and their obligations would conclude upon project completion.
During the debate, North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahumy, representing The Democrats, alleged that Fenaka jobs were created for political purposes, aiming to influence families and secure votes, with the adverse effects now being felt by those families.
Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir countered the allegations, stating that he had received information confirming that no Fenaka employees had been dismissed.
Amir accused the opposition of spreading false information to incite public unrest and urged them to focus on exposing corrupt activities within the company.
