The MDP Parliamentary Group has decided to withdraw the no-confidence motion against the Speaker and Vice-President Eva Abdullah today.

However, after the opening of today’s session, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said that according to the rules of Parliament, a no-confidence motion signed by 22 MPs should be moved.

The no-confidence motion was signed by 54 MPs. However, 25 members requested the withdrawal of the motion and the Speaker decided to proceed with the motion as there were still enough signatures.

The agenda for today’s session was to decide on the motion to impeach the Speaker.

The Democrats PG asked for a full House committee to set a time limit for the case. However, the MDP’s PG has withdrawn the case, stating that there was an administrative error and the case needs to be corrected.

The motion of no confidence against the Speaker and the Vice-Speaker of the majlis has now been signed by 21 MPs. Therefore, both the cases have been dropped due to lack of signatures.

According to the Rules of the Parliament, the Speaker or Vice-Speaker of the Parliament can be removed from office by a majority of the members present and voting at the session.
