MDP Shahid Sets Focus on 2026 Local Council Elections

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has underscored the party’s commitment to securing a decisive victory in the 2026 local council elections, describing the effort as critical to rebuilding the party’s grassroots strength.

Speaking on Raajje TV’s Fala Suruhee programme, Shahid acknowledged the party’s recent electoral losses and highlighted the need to restore public trust. He emphasised that holding the government accountable and strengthening local-level governance are immediate priorities for the MDP.

“The most important thing at the moment is to hold this government accountable,” Shahid stated, adding that the local council elections would serve as a stepping stone to re-establish the MDP’s influence across the Maldives.

When questioned about his potential candidacy in the 2028 presidential primary, Shahid refrained from committing, saying it was premature to make such decisions. “This is not the time for us to focus on internal matters tied to 2028,” he said. “My entire focus will be on ensuring the MDP achieves victory in the 2026 local council elections.”

The MDP’s strategy, according to Shahid, centres on reconnecting with communities and showcasing the party’s capacity to address local issues effectively. “This is a time for the MDP to focus on how much we can win in our islands, our provinces, and our cities in 2026,” he noted.

Shahid’s commitment to grassroots engagement was evident during a public appearance in Hulhumalé on Sunday, where he met residents over evening tea. His outreach efforts signal a broader strategy to revitalise the MDP’s base ahead of the elections.

While Shahid avoided discussing his potential presidential bid, speculation about the MDP’s 2028 primary remains high. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, and former Vice President Faisal Naseem are among the expected contenders. Fayyaz has already announced his candidacy, hinting at a competitive primary.

Shahid concluded the interview by expressing optimism about the MDP’s future. “The people of the Maldives still look to the MDP for leadership and a clear path forward,” he said, reinforcing the party’s role as a beacon of hope for the nation.
