The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is preparing for a key meeting to determine whether to call an extraordinary congress, a move that could significantly influence the party’s internal dynamics and future direction.

The meeting is scheduled for 8:30 PM on this Saturday at the party’s headquarters and is expected to focus on two major issues: the formation of a rapid response leadership team and the potential decision to hold an extraordinary congress. These discussions come at a time of rising tension within the MDP, with increasing speculation about changes to its leadership structure.

According to Deputy Chairman Ibrahim Waheed, the gathering will address urgent organisational needs and strategic planning amid ongoing internal disagreements. The proposal to convene the party’s National Assembly is being interpreted as a calculated effort to manage growing divisions and competing leadership ambitions.

Party insiders suggest that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih could be a central figure in the push for leadership reform. There is growing belief that Solih is seeking to initiate structural changes within the party through the extraordinary congress. While he enjoys strong support from his base, speculation continues over his long-term plans, including rumours that he may be considering leaving the party.

The potential congress would take place against the backdrop of intensifying competition for the MDP’s presidential ticket. Several members have signalled interest in standing for the nomination, fuelling further uncertainty about the party’s future leadership. Among the declared contenders is MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, who has formally announced his candidacy. Other figures being discussed as potential candidates include Ahmed Shamheed and MDP President Abdullah Shahid.

In addition, supporters of former President Solih have reportedly begun campaigning to encourage him to seek the party’s nomination once again. Meanwhile, other prominent political figures, such as former Vice President Faisal Naseem, Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, and former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem (Salle), are also said to be exploring bids for the presidency.
