President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has unveiled development plans aimed at transforming the capital city of Male’ during Ufaaveri Male’ Bodu Jalsaa last night.
The centerpiece of this plan involves the conversion of Funadhoo, currently used as an oil storage island near Male’, into a bustling business hotel complex complete with a convention center. Additionally, efforts will be made to alleviate traffic congestion by widening the Sinamale Bridge.
President Solih announced that the necessary funds for this significant venture have already been secured from a friendly foreign nation, and preparations are underway to commence the project in the near future.
A promotional video highlighting the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) vision for the city was unveiled during the rally, emphasising the importance of enhancing connectivity between Funadhoo and the bustling Male’ city.
As part of the development plan, the Sinamale Bridge will undergo expansion to accommodate two additional lanes, effectively easing traffic congestion. Furthermore, plans are in motion to introduce rail services as part of an effort to bolster public transportation options, which will also encompass the Sinamale Bridge.
Another aspect of the plan is the establishment of a safari marina in Hulhumale’, adding to the allure of the region as a tourist destination.
To address the ongoing parking challenges within Male’ city, the plan calls for the construction of neighborhood parking facilities. Additionally, a significant transformation is set to take place in the market area, with the government considering relocating the port from the city’s north side to the Gulhifalhu.
This shift will pave the way for the creation of a modern cruise terminal, complemented by shopping malls, cinemas, and various other amenities. Pedestrian pathways will also be introduced to enhance the overall experience.
Furthermore, the plan encompasses changes in the city area, including the ongoing Villimale-Male’ bridge project, which will connect Male’, Villimale’, Thilafushi, Gulhifalhu, and Giraavaru.
