MET Office Issues Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alert for Central and Northern Atolls

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has issued a forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms for the Central and Northern atolls.

MET Office stated that the region will experience significant rainfall, potential thunderstorms, rough seas, and strong winds during this period. The inclement weather is expected to subside by Wednesday.

Currently, the MET Office has issued a White Alert for the area from Haa Alif Atoll to Thaa Atoll, effective until 18:00 hrs today. 

During this time, heavy rain and thunderstorms are anticipated. Winds are projected to be strong, ranging from 19 to 24 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour. Sea conditions are expected to be rough.

Recent statistics released by the MET Office indicate that the heaviest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo, amounting to 34.6 millimetres.

Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised by the MMS to remain vigilant and implement appropriate safety measures.

MMS categorises weather alerts as follows:

  • White alert: Alert Level 1
  • Yellow advisory: Alert Level 2
  • Orange warning: Alert Level 3
  • Red warning: Alert Level 4
