MV+ News Desk | January 12, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a forecast predicting adverse weather conditions across the country this week.

A cyclonic circulation currently situated in the southwest Bay of Bengal, far east of the Maldives, is expected to move westward. This weather system is anticipated to generate intense convective clouds over the Maldives region.

As a result, widespread rain, including heavy showers and thunderstorms, is expected across the nation from 13 to 18 January 2025. Additionally, average wind speeds are predicted to increase, leading to rough seas. Swell surges are also likely, particularly in the northern and central atolls.

The country experienced heavy rainfall during the New Year period as well, with Malé in particular facing severe flooding and significant property damage.

Authorities are urging residents and seafarers to stay updated with weather forecasts, advisories, and warnings to ensure necessary precautions are taken.
