Metal Detectors Installed at Maafushi Prison to Combat Smuggling, Says Minister

The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has announced the installation of two metal detectors at Maafushi Prison, aimed at preventing the smuggling of mobile phones into the facility.

During an interview with state media outlet Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Ihusaan disclosed that contraband, including phones and drugs, is commonly found in almost every cell. He highlighted that many scam calls originate from within the prison walls and outlined steps being taken to address this issue.

“Last week, we installed two metal detectors. Next month, we will acquire a body scanning machine. We are currently working on this,” said the Minister.

Minister Ihusaan further stated that after halting the entry of phones into the prison, the next focus would be on preventing scams within the broader society. He mentioned ongoing collaboration between the police and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to achieve this objective.
