Minister Announces Malaysian Company Interested in Establishing Drug Rehabilitation Centre
The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has announced that a Malaysian company has expressed interest in establishing and operating a drug rehabilitation centre in the Maldives.
In an interview with PSM News, Minister Ihusaan revealed that the interested party is a multinational company with a portfolio of several rehabilitation facilities worldwide. The company has submitted a proposal for the development and management of a rehabilitation centre in the Maldives.
The proposal represents a significant investment, and discussions are currently underway to evaluate the proposal and consider alternative options to ensure the provision of high-quality rehabilitation services.
The government opened opportunities for private firms to establish and operate rehabilitation centres for drug addicts in January, in accordance with the Drug Act.
Minister Ihusaan expressed confidence that involving private firms will increase competitiveness and improve the efficiency and quality of services, providing mutual benefits. He anticipates that private enterprises will begin offering services in the nation in the near future.
Rehabilitation centres established under the auspices of the National Drug Agency (NDA) are expected to offer a wide range of services for drug addiction treatment. These services include outpatient detoxification, psychiatric evaluations, counselling, psychosocial therapy, drug testing, and psychological assessments.
