Minister Confirms Interest from Councils in Acquiring Uninhabited Islands
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has confirmed that four island councils have expressed interest in acquiring uninhabited islands for economic activities.
This follows the government’s recent decision to allocate such islands to councils as part of a broader initiative to bolster local economies.
The councils of Inguraidhoo in Raa Atoll, Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, Maavashu in Laamu Atoll, and the Atoll Council of Meemu Atoll have each submitted proposals to acquire uninhabited islands. Minister Adam Shareef indicated that these proposals would be forwarded to the President’s Office once the necessary technical assessments have been completed.
Encouraging all councils to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the government, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted the importance of the availability of these islands for up to 25 years. He emphasised that this initiative is essential for empowering councils, providing opportunities for the youth, and fostering the development of industrial activities.
Earlier this year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged to simplify the process for councils to obtain permits to operate income-generating businesses. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to making island communities more self-reliant and self-sufficient, stating that uninhabited islands would be leased to councils for economic activities for periods ranging from 10 to 25 years.
