Ministry Announces Programme to Recruit Local Hafiz for Ramadan
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced plans to recruit local Hafiz to lead Tarawih prayers and oversee Quran memorisation (Hifz) sessions during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
Application forms, along with the necessary supporting documents, are available at local council offices or can be downloaded from the ministry’s official website, www.islamicaffairs.gov.mv.
Hafiz selected to lead Tarawih prayers at mosques across the country will receive an allowance of MVR 500 per night. Each mosque will appoint two Hafiz for this purpose. Additionally, the ministry is seeking Maldivian Hafiz to lead prayers at the Islamic Centre and Salman Mosque in Malé, where the selected individuals will receive an allowance of MVR 700 per night.
As part of broader efforts to strengthen religious leadership, the government has launched a Khatib Training Programme. This initiative equips participants with the skills required to deliver sermons (khutbah), lead prayers, and undertake other religious duties. In addition to school graduates, students from Grades 10, 11, and 12 are also participating in these programmes.
The Ministry has also granted permission to 270 children under the age of 18 to deliver sermons and lead Friday prayers, highlighting a commitment to fostering young religious leaders.
The government aims to train 1,000 khatibs during its current term, as part of its long-term strategy to support religious education and leadership across the nation.
