The Ministry of Education has released the academic calendar for 2025, with annual holidays set for December, marking a return to a more traditional schedule following adjustments made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The academic year-end holidays were moved to June and July in 2021 to account for a delay in the 2020 academic year, which was postponed by 18 months due to the pandemic. However, this period coincided with the monsoon season, raising public concerns as many families encountered difficulties in travelling and enjoying their holidays. Surveys conducted by the ministry showed that 70% of respondents were against this schedule change.

During the recent presidential election campaign, citizens voiced their concerns and requested that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu restore the academic calendar to its former structure. Upon assuming office, President Muizzu committed to gradually returning the academic calendar to a January start.

According to the tentative calendar for 2025, the new academic year will begin on 6 April, with teachers set to start preparatory work from 3 April. The first term break is scheduled from 28 July to 7 August, with the second term starting on 10 August. Students will also have a midterm break from 21 to 25 September.

The second term will conclude on 25 December, and the year-end holidays will officially start on 28 December, lasting until 22 January. The 2026 academic year is expected to begin on 27 January.
