The Ministry of Health has officially commenced the development of three regional hospitals into tertiary-level facilities, following the signing of agreements yesterday at a ceremony held at the Ministry.
The initiative includes major projects at Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Lhaviyani Naifaru Atoll Hospital, and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital. These developments aim to significantly enhance healthcare delivery across the northern, central, and southern regions of the Maldives.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded contracts to construct new hospital buildings in Thinadhoo and Ungoofaaru. In contrast, the development at Naifaru will focus on upgrading existing infrastructure, a task assigned to the Road Development Corporation (RDC).
The Thinadhoo hospital project, valued at MVR 147.43 million, involves the construction of a new 87,455-square-foot facility with a capacity of 102 beds. The project is scheduled for completion within 540 days, or approximately one and a half years.
Similarly, the Ungoofaaru hospital development, valued at MVR 161.24 million, will see the addition of a 95,645-square-foot facility, also with a capacity of 102 beds and a timeline of 540 days.
At Naifaru Hospital, the focus is on upgrading key departments to meet tertiary care standards. This includes the modernisation of the labour room complex and the intensive care unit (ICU).
Upon completion, these projects are expected to improve access to advanced medical services across the country and reduce the reliance on facilities in Malé for specialised care.
