The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has reported that there are over 1,000 unregistered vehicles on the streets of Male’ and Hulhumale’.

The figures were revealed during the launch of the Male’ Fahi programme last night. The report highlighted that a significant number of vehicles are being stored on the streets while awaiting sale or registration.

According to the ministry’s survey, there are currently more than 1,100 unregistered four-wheeled vehicles parked on public roads. This practice is illegal and violates business regulations.

To address the issue, the ministry plans to designate a specific area for parking such vehicles, with the option to lease space. This new arrangement will be conducted in a regulated manner, akin to other business operations.

The report also noted that over 118,000 vehicles are registered in the Male’ region, with some individuals owning multiple registered vehicles. Additionally, some vehicles purchased through instalment schemes have been left on the streets due to non-payment.

In response, the Ministry will introduce a buy-back programme for these vehicles. After evaluating each vehicle, a system will be established to determine whether the vehicle should be recycled, re-exported, or sold as scrap metal.
