The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has announced the initiation of a significant project aimed at enhancing the major roads of Ihavandhoo, situated in Haa Alifu Atoll.
The project’s inauguration was officiated by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, alongside Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation (RDC), Brigadier General (retd) Ali Zuhair.
Initially awarded to the RDC in April 2022, the project entails the development of major thoroughfares within Ihavandhoo. According to the RDC, fieldwork will commence once the requisite surveys and design phases are finalised.
The project’s scope encompasses the paving and modernisation of 15 key roads, integrating contemporary drainage systems for enhanced functionality. Furthermore, there are plans for the repair and relocation of subsurface pipes and cables, followed by the installation of road signs and street lighting upon completion. The overarching aim is to complete the paving of all designated roads within a six-month timeframe. The project has been contracted to the RDC at a cost of USD 6.6 million.
Ihavandhoo, the second-largest island in the atoll, boasts a population of approximately 3,000 residents. The impending improvements in road infrastructure are poised to deliver substantial benefits to the local community, aligning with the government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure island-wide.
