The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has raised concerns about the integrity of the 11th Journalism Awards by the Media Council of the Maldives (MMC).

In a statement, the MJA expressed its worry that recent developments had severely undermined the credibility of the award, casting doubt on the integrity of both the council and the judging process.

The association referred to the dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of MMC’s President Ahmed Musthafa, following his win in the Investigative Video/Audio category at the awards ceremony. This, along with certain statements made by the judges, has led to a significant loss of confidence in the awards, the MJA stated.

The MJA also expressed concern over allegations that statements made by Media Council President Musthafa, along with some government-appointed judges, were influenced by fears over job security. The association warned that such developments could exert undue pressure on future journalism awards, potentially hindering the ability of journalists to critique the government freely.

Additionally, the MJA noted the ongoing investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into the award, suggesting that the presence of powerful influences could further compromise the process. The association has called for a fair and transparent examination of the situation to ensure the integrity of future awards.
