The Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI) has voiced concerns following two incidents involving gas cylinder explosions in different regions of the Maldives.
On the 21st of this month, a gas cylinder explosion occurred in HDh. Makunudhoo, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two lives. A similar incident took place on the 19th of this month at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi airport, where four individuals sustained injuries due to a gas cylinder explosion.
In response to these incidents, MNACI has released a statement expressing concerns about the safety and quality of work sites, materials, equipment, and the handling of hazardous chemicals, gases, and other potentially dangerous materials.
The organisation has also emphasised the importance of measures taken for the safety and health of workers, as well as those living in proximity to construction sites.
Furthermore, MNACI has called on the government to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of workers and residents in the vicinity of construction activities.
In addition to advocating for the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, MNACI has recommended that the government adhere to the 2010 Construction Sites Safety and Security Guidelines, which were formulated by the association.
Lastly, the statement issued by MNACI has urged relevant authorities to conduct thorough safety inspections of individuals operating heavy equipment and other workplaces across the Maldives.
This proactive approach is aimed at preventing future accidents and ensuring the safety of all involved in the construction industry.
