The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has begun physical work to move the Thalassemia Centre from its current location in Male’ City, which is in a deteriorating condition, to the newly developing Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumale’ Phase I.
On Wednesday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that the MNDF would oversee the Orange Hiyaa project, which remains largely unfinished despite the nearing expiration of the construction contract. This initiative is part of a national effort to accelerate the project’s completion.
Work officially began on Thursday, with Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, the Chief of Defence Force, inspecting the progress. He was accompanied by Brigadier General Ahmed Giyas, the Vice Chief of Defence Force, Colonel Ismail Naseer, MNDF’s Service Corp Commandant, and other heads of Service Corp Units.
MNDF has confirmed that its Service Corp is managing the project under the supervision of Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon. The military’s electrical and mechanical engineers are responsible for wiring and installing air conditioning systems in the building. Additionally, technical soldiers from MNDF Signals are handling the ICT-related tasks.
The redesign of the building, which was carried out by MNDF’s electrical and mechanical engineers, includes modifications to cater to the needs of children. The MNDF has set a target to complete the project by April 25th.
The decision to expedite the completion of the Orange Hiyaa facility followed protests at the Thalassemia Centre in Male’, where concerns were raised about increased blood wastage due to damage to the filters used at the centre. In response, President Muizzu visited the facility on Sunday, where he reviewed the status of various departments and met with patients and their families to listen to their concerns.
