The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has assumed responsibility for the security of Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan.

Typically, the security for ministers, excluding the Defence Minister, is provided by the police, which operates under the Ministry of Homeland Security.

Local media reported that Minister Ihusaan confirmed that the change followed a routine threat assessment. He emphasised that the decision was not prompted by any significant incident.

The Ministry of Homeland Security, often regarded as a key government body, is currently focused on addressing the issue of undocumented expatriates in the Maldives. One of its primary efforts is targeting expatriates operating businesses illegally through extensive networks, with the government taking measures to shut down these operations as part of its broader initiative to regulate and manage undocumented foreign workers.

Minister Ihusaan has also spearheaded the drafting of legislation aimed at tackling gang crime, drug smuggling, and introducing capital punishment for certain offences.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has recently published a list of prominent businesses operating without paying the required expatriate fees. The list includes some of the Maldives’ most influential companies, which are believed to have the power to exert pressure on the government.
