Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism for strengthened ties between Maldives and India following a congratulatory message from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu yesterday, marking Modi’s third consecutive victory in India’s general elections.
Securing a landmark win, Modi, 73, becomes the only prime minister to achieve such a feat, joining the ranks of India’s post-independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.

Muizzu posted on X last evening to congratulate Modi and express his eagerness for collaborative efforts toward mutual prosperity and stability.
Responding on X today, Modi reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging the Maldives as a “valued partner and neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region.” He expressed readiness for enhanced cooperation to fortify bilateral relations.
Despite Modi’s substantial victory, his ruling alliance, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), fell short of the anticipated significant majority.

The NDA secured 291 out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of parliament, with Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claiming 239 seats. The opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the Congress party, surpassed expectations by securing 234 seats.
