Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, commonly known as Bigey, emerged victorious as the parliamentary group leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in the election held on yesterday.
Mohamed Rasheed Hussain secured the position with a total of 28 votes, outperforming his nearest competitor, Jabir, who garnered 20 votes. Abdul Ghanee received a mere two votes. The election saw the participation of 51 MPs from the Parliament’s majority party, with one vote declared invalid.
This electoral outcome marks a significant development within the MDP, as Mohamed Rasheed Hussain assumes the role previously held by North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam, who recently took office as the Parliament’s Speaker.
With MDP commanding a majority in the Parliament with 56 MPs, Bigey’s election solidified his position as the majority leader in the legislative body. The transition in leadership is expected to shape the party’s direction and influence parliamentary proceedings in the coming sessions.
