MP Azaan Demands Parliament Inquiry Into Youth Falling From Building

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan has called on the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) to launch an immediate inquiry into the fall of a 21-year-old girl from a building in Henveiru, citing public outrage and alleged irregularities in the police investigation.

The girl was found on the roof of a godown next to H. Fentenoi on Friday, reportedly after falling from a small window on the ninth floor of the building. According to police, she was accompanied by a young man who was found to be intoxicated but was not arrested. The case has sparked widespread concern after authorities disclosed the girl’s identity early on but withheld the identities of others involved, including individuals allegedly holding political positions.

Protests erupted across Malé on Wednesday night as citizens voiced dissatisfaction with the transparency and pace of the investigation. Mostly youth were seen in the protest. Critics have pointed out a lack of consistency and fairness, especially regarding the public handling of those involved.

In a letter to Speaker Abdulla Abdul Raheem, MP Azaan emphasized the public’s eroding trust in the police and called for an independent parliamentary investigation to ensure accountability. 

Further pressure mounted on the government after South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Nasym submitted a motion to summon Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihsan. Naseem also called for Social and Family Development Minister Aishath Shiham to be questioned for reportedly failing to initiate a forensic examination despite allegations that the girl was sexually assaulted before the fall.

The police initially briefed the media in a closed-door session on Tuesday. While the girl’s identity was revealed that day, names of the others involved—including Raud Ahmed Zilal, 21, who was confirmed to be with the girl—were disclosed only at a press conference held today. CCTV footage was also shared with the media, which broadcast a live telecast, offering a glimpse into the events of that night.

In the wake of the revelations, several individuals associated with this high-profile case have either resigned or been suspended from political positions. The mounting political and public pressure now places the spotlight on the 241 Committee’s response as calls for justice and transparency grow louder across the nation.
