MP for the South Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Nasym, will submit a resolution to ascertain the parliamentarians’ opinions on the Speaker’s actions, which MP Meekail alleges hinder the parliamentarians from fulfilling their duties.
The resolution is to be submitted under Article 189 of the parliament regulations.
In a post on X, concerns were raised over ministers failing to attend parliamentary sittings to answer questions, despite being scheduled to do so. It also pointed to the repeated cancellation of the weekly sessions, with no justification provided for the continued absence of other ministers.

In the resolution, he outlines that it is the constitutional duty of parliamentarians to ensure the executive carries out their duties and to hold them accountable. He also notes that ministers and the heads of state institutions can only be summoned after the Speaker of the Parliament schedules it, even though it falls within the duties of parliamentarians to keep them accountable. Additionally, he said the parliament is mandated to ensure three sessions are held weekly.
Meekail says he would like to understand how the parliamentarians feel about the Speaker’s actions preventing them from carrying out their duties, given that:
- Ministers have refused to appear before the parliament despite receiving the formal summons, with the deadline for their appearance having passed.
- The Speaker has repeatedly delayed scheduling the summoning of ministers and institution heads
- Three weekly parliamentary sessions are not held regularly.
The last parliamentary session took place on Wednesday, 16 April. According to parliamentary regulations, sessions must be held every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. So far this April, only four sessions have been held.
The first week of April coincided with public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr. In the week following the holidays, parliament met only once—on Monday, 7 April. The next week, it held sessions on all three mandated days. However, no sessions have been held so far this week.
