MPL Introduces Dedicated Water Barge for Offshore Bunkering Services
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched a dedicated barge to streamline water supply services to vessels as part of the government’s offshore bunkering initiative in Ihavandhippolhu. The barge, constructed at MPL’s dockyard in Thilafushi, has a 200-tonne water capacity and is now en route to the northern atolls.
This marks an improvement from previous operations, where water was delivered via tanks transported on a landing craft. The new barge will exclusively support water bunkering services, with plans to install an on-board water plant for in-situ production.

MPL Managing Director Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim noted that with the recent surge in orders, the offshore bunkering services are projected to generate an estimated monthly revenue of USD 1.5 million.
In addition to water supply, MPL’s offshore bunkering services encompass pilotage, crew changes, ship-to-ship transfers, speedboat support, as well as supplies of food, medicine, tug assistance, and maintenance. MPL is also working to acquire additional tugs to expand its service capacity.
This new development reflects MPL’s ongoing efforts to enhance support for maritime operations in the region, ensuring efficient and comprehensive offshore services for vessels navigating Maldivian waters.
