President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed reducing the size of parliament and the number of councillors, emphasising the need for a more sustainable and cost-effective governance system.

Speaking at an event at the PNC’s party centre last night, Muizzu highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced approach when discussing cost reduction. He expressed support for reducing the size of parliament to a more manageable number, suggesting that the 17th parliamentary assembly, with 77 members, was ideal.

“It would not be right to reduce too small when reducing the size. The number of the 17th parliamentary assembly was the most ideal, that is 77 members,” he stated.

Muizzu underscored that the parliament’s recurrent expenses would be reduced if amendments were implemented to prevent an increase in the number of lawmakers.

Additionally, Muizzu argued for a reduction in the number of councils, asserting that the public’s voice would not be silenced by such a move. He pointed out the significant expense of electing multiple officials for islands with small populations, suggesting that a president and vice president for councils would suffice for smaller communities, with a slight increase for cities.

He also criticised the current structure of atoll councils, noting that meetings often require physical attendance due to the necessity of having the council president present. Muizzu expressed his commitment to making atoll councils smaller and more efficient.

In terms of independent commissions, Muizzu announced plans to submit amendments to parliament to reduce the number of members required by law and to consolidate commissions with similar functions to enhance their capacity and efficiency.

Muizzu’s remarks come as the ruling PNC has submitted a resolution to parliament advocating for the same reductions in the number of MPs.
