President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has resolved to establish a comprehensive guideline for the employment of people with disabilities, following a recommendation from the Cabinet.

The decision, in line with the government’s commitment to promoting equal employment opportunities, comes after discussions on a proposal presented by the Ministry of Social and Family Development during a recent Cabinet meeting held on December 17, 2023.

Muizzu, whose initial 14-week roadmap emphasised a commitment to fostering job creation for individuals with disabilities within the civil service and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), is now set to operationalize this policy with the introduction of the new guideline. The aim is to significantly improve employment prospects for people with disabilities within the civil service and SOEs.

The guideline encompasses provisions geared towards enhancing workplace safety for individuals with disabilities, addressing potential stressors in the work environment, and implementing training programs aimed at sensitising employees to disabilities. The decision comes at a time when 12,011 individuals are officially enrolled in the disability category as of November 2023.
