Muizzu Appeals to Solih for Yameen’s Transfer to Home Confinement

The newly-elected opposition President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the People’s National Congress (PNC) has appealed to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, requesting the transfer of jailed opposition leader and former president, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, to home confinement.

During his inaugural press conference last night as the president-elect, Muizzu took a moment to address President Solih, urging him to consider moving Yameen to home confinement.

In a measured statement, he emphasised that the president possesses the authority to effect this change, asserting that it would be in the best interests of the country.

Expanding on the significance of his election victory, Muizzu expressed his determination to chart the nation’s future and underscored its importance in safeguarding the nation’s independence.

Muizzu underscored the need for unity at this pivotal juncture, emphasising that national interests must take precedence over personal ones. He posited that embracing such a mindset could foster peace throughout the nation. 

The president-elect emphasized his commitment to aligning his words and actions, emphasising his stance that all Maldivian citizens, regardless of political affiliation, are equal in his eyes and entitled to their rights.
