President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with members of the fishing community this morning at the President’s Office, where fishermen raised pressing industry concerns, including low fish prices, fuel shortages, and offloading challenges.

The fishermen presented their concerns in detail, outlining the financial pressures they face due to the current pricing of fish and the increasing costs of operation. Additionally, many expressed frustration with the difficulty in accessing fuel, a crucial resource for their vessels, as well as obstacles in obtaining financing for expansion and modernisation. Offloading fish, which remains a logistical hurdle, was also discussed as a significant barrier to their business efficiency.

Beyond the concerns, the fishing community also proposed ideas for advancing the industry, particularly through the use of modern technology. They emphasised the need to modernise equipment and expand the fishing market, with a focus on improving the quality of fish products to increase competitiveness. Their suggestions included exploring new markets for Maldivian fish and investing in sustainable practices to ensure the long-term viability of the industry.

President Muizzu, speaking at the meeting, reassured the fishermen that the government is committed to addressing these concerns and will work closely with them to find solutions. He acknowledged the importance of the fishing sector to the nation’s economy and promised that the issues raised would be taken seriously and acted upon swiftly. The President also expressed his commitment to holding similar meetings more frequently to maintain an open dialogue with the fishing community and ensure continuous support for their needs.
