In his first press conference as the president-elect on Saturday night, Muizzu made a request to Solih to exercise his executive powers to transfer the leader of the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, to home confinement.

Muizzu argued that this move would be in the best interests of the country.

Coinciding with Muizzu’s meeting with Solih today, Yameen was transferred from Maafushi Prison to Male’ City.

In a post on Saturday night, President Solih gracefully conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to Muizzu. In his message, President Solih expressed gratitude to the Maldivian people “for the exemplary demonstration of democratic principles in the election.”

The MDP, President Solih’s party, also congratulated Muizzu on his victory. MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail affirmed that as the opposition, MDP would continue to responsibly hold the government accountable and ensure the protection of democratic principles in the Maldives.
