Muizzu Nominates Hassan Zakariyya for ECM Membership

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominated Hassan Zakariyya, the current Secretary General of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), for membership within the commission yesterday. 

Zakariyya is proposed to replace Ismail Habeeb, the current Vice President of the EC, whose term is nearing its expiration.

Habeeb’s tenure is scheduled to conclude on March 13th.

Muizzu put forward the name of Hassan Zakariyya, ECM’s Secretary General, from a pool of applicants for the position, submitting the nomination to parliament yesterday.

During yesterday’s parliamentary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem, Zakariyya’s nomination was referred to the Committee for Independent Institutions for thorough assessment.

Habeeb, who is completing his second term as a member of the electoral body, is ineligible for an additional term as per legal stipulations.

Additionally, the current term of ECM’s Chairman Fuad Thaufeeg, also serving his second term, is slated to conclude in November of this year.
