Muizzu Visits National Thalassaemia Center Following Protest, Talks to Patients About Concerns

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the National Thalassaemia Center today to meet up with patients after they held a protest last night over the lack of solutions to persistent problems the patients have been facing.
According to the President’s Office, Muizzu listened to the patient’s concerns and checked in on the organisation’s daily operations.
He also met with staff and senior officials to discuss key challenges, guiding effective and swift solutions to improve patient care.

However, solutions regarding the issues brought up at the protest remain unaddressed.
During last night’s protest at the Maldives Blood Service (MBS), the thalassaemia patients and their families called for the resignation of the National Thalassaemia Center’s management. One of the main issues raised by the protesters was blood wastage due to damage to blood packets by the use of faulty filters. Protesters expressed frustration, stating that securing blood donations is already challenging, particularly during Ramadan, and that it is distressing to see blood being discarded due to what they described as negligence by the centre’s management.
