The People’s National Congress (PNC) presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has stated that he does not intend to terminate any agreements that prove to be beneficial to the Maldives.

Muizzu pledged that, if elected, he would make public the agreements related to development projects that have been shrouded in secrecy during the current administration’s tenure.

Highlighting the current government’s practice of classifying agreements related to development projects and loans, Muizzu expressed his concern. “What’s happening now is they refuse to disclose certain clauses of an agreement for a development project. It has to be taken up with the Supreme Court,” he explained.

Muizzu emphasised that his foremost priority, if elected, would be to make these agreements accessible to the public, with the intention of expediting rather than obstructing projects. “The purpose is to move forward. We can only move forward once we are aware of the facts,” he stressed.

However, Muizzu made it clear that he would not hesitate to modify provisions in agreements that pose a threat to national security.

One notable issue raised during Muizzu’s statement was the refusal of the current administration to disclose agreements pertaining to projects funded under the Indian credit line, including the Uthuru Thila Falhu project and the Thilamale’ Bridge project.
