MVR 3.8 Million Disbursed as Disaster Relief in 2023

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has disclosed that MVR 3.8 million has been allocated in aid for numerous disasters that unfolded last year, as per their recently released annual report.
According to the report, a total of 184 disasters were documented by the authority in 2023. The most prevalent among these were fire incidents, constituting 95 reported cases, followed closely by instances of flooding triggered by heavy rainfall, which accounted for 54 reported cases. A significant portion of these reports originated from Male’ and Addu Cities.
The report underscores that 295 households across 12 atolls reported damages last year, with MVR 3.8 million being dispersed to 281 of these households as assistance. This aid encompasses humanitarian relief, compensation for household goods damage, and reimbursement for property damage.
The largest portion of aid was directed towards compensating property and building damages, amounting to MVR 2.7 million.
Furthermore, the authority noted that approximately 1,450 individuals were adversely affected by the reported disasters last year.
In response to the enactment of new regulations governing the provision of humanitarian assistance and compensation for disaster-induced losses to families, the state has announced an increase in financial aid to mitigate such calamities.
