The Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Eva Abdullah, and the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed, have tendered their resignations from their respective positions.
The resignations were officially announced during a parliamentary session that commenced at 16:00 today.
The session, presided over by Addu Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef, marked the departure of two key figures from their roles.
Nasheed, in a letter expressing his resignation, emphasised the need for resolving political issues through dialogue within and outside the parliamentary sphere, rather than resorting to legal avenues. He stressed the importance of mutual respect and prioritising the nation’s interests.
Nasheed, citing concerns in his resignation letter, lamented the approach taken by the majority party, the MDP, in parliament. He asserted that their actions were poised to permanently limit the powers of the legislative body, describing it as an unfortunate trajectory. According to Nasheed, prolonged stay in office would only exacerbate the damage inflicted by the majority party on the parliamentary system.
Expressing regret over the unfolding events, Nasheed highlighted the injustice faced by the people due to the actions of the majority party. He foresaw an increasing detrimental impact on the Parliament if the current course persisted.
In a forward-looking tone, Nasheed expressed his hope that his resignation would contribute to restoring stability and integrity within the democratic system, signifying his commitment to the broader well-being of the nation.
