Nasheed Honoured with Global Citizenship Award for Climate Advocacy
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has been awarded the Global Citizenship Award in recognition of his contributions to environmental protection, climate advocacy, and societal development.

Established in 2014 by Henley & Partners, a global leader in citizenship and residency solutions, the Global Citizenship Award forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. It honours individuals who work tirelessly to advance human development and environmental sustainability on a global scale.
Nasheed, renowned for his pioneering efforts in climate action and human rights, has garnered widespread international acclaim for his leadership. During his presidency from 2008 to 2012, he drew global attention to the existential threat of climate change, particularly its impact on low-lying island nations such as the Maldives.
His presidency was marked by groundbreaking initiatives, including the 2009 underwater cabinet meeting, a symbolic act aimed at highlighting the urgency of addressing rising sea levels. Nasheed’s transformative approach to governance also encompassed democratic reforms and promoting renewable energy.
In a statement, the Maldives Democrats Party praised his lifelong dedication to societal progress, noting: “President Nasheed’s life is marked by international awards and recognitions for his efforts in the defence of human rights and the fight against climate change.”
Nasheed’s accolades include being named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes of the Environment” and securing a place on Foreign Policy magazine’s list of Top Global Thinkers.
Since leaving office, Nasheed has continued to serve as a leading voice in climate advocacy, championing renewable energy initiatives, carbon reduction strategies, and the protection of vulnerable communities from the effects of climate change.
