Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed announced via social media today that he will not actively engage with either of the political parties he founded: the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats.

Nasheed’s decision comes after four key figures instrumental in forming The Democrats left the party to rejoin the MDP. In a statement shared on X, he emphasised that he does not intend to oppose any political party.

Describing the MDP as akin to a “son”, Nasheed conveyed his hopes for the party’s continued strength. He also acknowledged The Democrats as a platform that enabled young people to participate in politics. Despite this, he clarified that he would not actively align with any political organisation at present.

While stepping back from political party activities, Nasheed stated his intention to remain engaged in the Maldivian political sphere.

Nasheed parted ways with then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih prior to the 2023 presidential elections due to irreconcilable differences. This separation led to the establishment of The Democrats in June 2023. However, the party struggled to gain traction, achieving limited success in the first round of the presidential election and failing to make significant gains in the April 2024 parliamentary elections.

Reflecting on his political journey, Nasheed highlighted his efforts in establishing a multi-party system in the Maldives, which he views as a vital element for national progress. He credited competitive political activities following the 2008 presidential election for advancements in government revenue, infrastructure development, and social security.

Although stepping away from active politics, Nasheed continues to serve as the Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). He relocated to Ghana a year ago to undertake his responsibilities in this role.
