MV+ News Desk | December 31, 2024

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory warning of severe weather conditions expected to impact the Maldives from January 1 to 5, 2025. The authority predicts that a low-pressure trough, associated with a vortex forming southwest of Sri Lanka, will bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, rough seas, and the potential for sea surge and flooding across many atolls in the country.

Key Safety Measures:

The NDMA has provided a list of essential precautions to reduce the risk of damage and protect property:

  • Flood Preparedness: Be aware of the risk of flooding due to heavy rainfall. Use sandbags or similar barriers at doorways to prevent water from entering homes.
  • Move Belongings to Higher Ground: Relocate household appliances, such as washing machines and refrigerators, from flood-prone areas to higher, safer locations to avoid potential damage.
  • Secure Roofs: If strong winds are expected to dislodge the roof, take preventive action by securing it with ropes or other appropriate materials.
  • Store or Fasten Loose Items: Ensure that items that could be carried away by strong winds, such as outdoor furniture, are fastened securely or stored indoors.
  • Unplug Electrical Appliances: To avoid electrical damage or hazards, turn off and unplug appliances when not in use.
  • Sea Travel Safety: Those planning to travel by sea must check updated weather information with relevant authorities before departure. Ensure proper safety measures, including communication systems, are in place during the journey.
  • Stock Up on Essentials: Prepare in advance by stocking up on essential supplies, including staple foods, to avoid shortages during severe weather events.

As a precautionary measure, the NDMA urges the public to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to safeguard themselves against severe weather conditions.
