NDMA to Assess Flood Damage in Male’ Following Heavy Rainfall

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced plans to evaluate the damage to houses affected by heavy rainfall and flooding in Male’ last Friday.
The assessments are set to begin on Sunday as part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to address the impacts of the recent weather event.
According to the NDMA, 226 individuals from 26 households were displaced due to the flooding. In response, the agency provided temporary shelter for two days to support affected families during the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
The floods, triggered by intense rainfall, caused widespread disruption in the capital. Several areas were inundated, leaving some parts of the city submerged and vehicles damaged. Hulhulé recorded the highest rainfall at 144 millimetres, with Malé following closely at 142.2 millimetres.
Local Government Minister Adam Shareef stated that the government is actively monitoring the situation. Writing on X, the minister noted that, following the President’s instructions, the Local Government Ministry is closely collaborating with island councils to assess damages and address citizens’ concerns.

He also revealed that ministry staff had visited Himmafushi Council Member Wafiyya Ibrahim, who was injured by electrocution while attempting to protect equipment in the flooded council offices.
The NDMA reported receiving 774 requests for assistance from Malé, with 554 of these seeking help to stack sandbags at entryways. Rapid assessments were conducted at 53 residences, leading to the provision of temporary shelter and food for affected individuals.
Government efforts to assist those impacted by the heavy rains remain ongoing.
