The nationwide tree-planting initiative was first introduced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the COP28 climate summit held in Dubai in 2023. At the summit, the president outlined the programme as a key measure to improve the environmental condition of island communities across the Maldives.
The programme was officially launched on Environment Day in 2024. Since then, a range of state-owned enterprises and private organisations have taken part in tree-planting efforts.
According to the ministry, participating organisations have collectively pledged to plant 5.2 million trees across the country. Among the major pledges, the Housing Development Corporation and Maldives Ports Limited have each committed to planting one million trees. The Regional Airports Company has pledged 600,000 trees, while the State Electric Company Limited has committed to planting 500,000 trees. SDM Farm has pledged 750,000 trees, with a further 1.3 million trees pledged by other institutions, associations and companies.
The programme is part of the Maldives’ broader strategy to address the effects of climate change and support long-term environmental sustainability across the islands.
