The Regional Airports Company Limited (RAC) has announced that the upcoming new runway project at Hanimadhoo Airport is on track, to be completed by next month.
The contract for the airport’s development was awarded to JMC Projects (India) Limited in January of this year. Once the project reaches completion, the newly enhanced runway will be capable of accommodating Boeing 737 and A320 aircraft. The total value of this initiative stands at $136.6 million, with financing coming from India’s line of credit.
RAC has taken measures ensuring that ongoing airport operations are not disrupted during the construction phase.
The Hanimaadhoo International Airport project is progressing through various stages, with RAC offering an overview of the project’s current status.
Among the endeavors, the construction of the runway stands out as a particularly fast-moving aspect. The overarching project encompasses the creation of a 2465-meter runway at Hanimaadhoo, an endeavor that is being executed in three distinct phases.
The first step in this process involves completing a 1,400-meter section of the runway, situated to the south of the existing one. Subsequently, this new portion of the runway will be joined with the remaining section, following the removal of the existing runway. This approach is designed to ensure seamless connectivity and efficient airport operations.
Project Director Inder Singh briefed the press, asserting that progress is proceeding according to schedule. He anticipates that the 1,400-meter southern section of the new runway will be open for use by the end of this month.
Singh stated, “The southern segment of the new runway will be made operational prior to the demolition of the existing runway. The entire process is projected to be concluded by November.”
Ahmed Ibrahim, Chief Operating Officer of Regional Airports, shared insights into the airport’s expansion plans. He mentioned the intention to set up a temporary terminal as part of the airport’s enlargement strategy, aimed at accommodating increasing traffic once the new runway is in operation.
Ibrahim explained, “Our aim is to ensure seamless airport operations without causing any disturbances. We are committed to this effort, working tirelessly from 2 am to 2 pm daily. While this is undoubtedly a challenging task, the local resorts have expressed their desire to have flight operations continue without any interruptions.”
Beyond the runway development, the airport’s expansion encompasses several other significant elements, including a new terminal, a dedicated seaplane landing area, fuel storage facilities, a fire building, and various service buildings.
