The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has officially declared its endorsement for the MDP candidate and current president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming 2023 presidential elections in a statement released yesterday.

TEAM highlighted the government’s track record in safeguarding workers’ rights within the tourism sector over the past five years, in their statement.

TEAM also acknowledged a milestone in the form of the implementation of a minimum wage policy in consultation with resort employees, which had an effect on the earnings of resort employees. This policy also mandated resorts to allocate a 10% service charge as required by law and established a robust monitoring system to ensure compliance.

Additionally, TEAM pointed out that legislative changes had been introduced to prevent arbitrary dismissals, ensuring that workers were protected by clear and fair regulations.

According to TEAM, the government had been responsive to the requests of resort employees by modifying school holiday schedules and changing the law to allow resort employees to leave the resort at times other than working hours, while also implementing legislation to prevent resort employees from working without proper authorization.

TEAM also stated that the President has promised to launch a special housing scheme for resort employees in the next term. Therefore, many members believe that the best way for the employees in the next term is to maintain the current government, the association said.

Furthermore, the referral of the Workplace Safety and Security Bill to Parliament and the Industry Relations Bill to be sent to Parliament with discussion and amendments are additional factors contributing to TEAM’s support for President Solih in the 2023 Elections.
