The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has emphasised that households in Male’ City have no valid reason for leaving waste on the streets, citing the current legal framework.

This development follows the integration of the waste collection bill with the utility bill, a regulatory shift aimed at streamlining waste management practices. Despite this, WAMCO has noted instances of improper waste disposal, prompting the introduction of a specific packing standard for waste collection.

WAMCO has clarified that it will only collect waste that meets the established packing standards, consistently notifying homeowners who fail to comply. The company emphasises the importance of waste segregation and retains the right to decline collection if this criterion is not met. It encourages the public to separate biodegradable waste, plastic bottles, and other materials for proper disposal.

In an effort to address the issue of waste on the streets, WAMCO has advised against improper waste disposal and initiated awareness campaigns, particularly during periods of heightened street waste. The company has announced the deployment of specialized vehicles for the collection of waste that cannot be easily managed.

The Male’ City Council has taken a firm stance on street littering this year, deciding to impose fines on individuals found guilty of this offence. According to the law for community monitoring security services in the city, the council has the authority to penalise those who litter the streets.

Highlighting the ongoing challenge of waste management in the Maldives, WAMCO has reiterated its call for public cooperation. The corporation urges citizens to refrain from discarding waste on the streets and to adhere to established laws and regulations.
