The President’s Office disclosed that the construction progress of the Thilamale’ Bridge is behind schedule, with only 27% completion compared to the anticipated 77% at this stage, according to the project work plan.

During a press conference held yesterday evening, Mohamed Firuzul Abdul Khaleel, the Undersecretary for Public Policy at the President’s Office, shared key decisions and plans outlined by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The Transitional Committee, tasked with assessing the Thilamale’ Bridge Project during the transition period, reported a notable delay in the project’s advancement.

Identifying the reasons for the delay is set as a top priority by the administration, with Firuzul stating that this task is slated for week 14 of the administration’s first 100-day plan. Once the causes are identified, a roadmap will be developed to expedite the remaining work.

Muizzu has previously expressed his commitment to accelerating the Thilamale’ Bridge project. The construction, contracted to India’s Afcons Infrastructure in August 2021, is financed through a USD 400 million loan from India’s Exim Bank.

Acknowledging the slower-than-desired progress, Muizzu’s predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, had conceded that the project’s pace was not meeting his expectations. He believed that a more favorable project status could have potentially impacted his performance in the presidential elections held in September.
