Opposition Leader Face Backlash Over Ameen Didi Remarks
The Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has come under sharp criticism from members of the ruling party following his defence of controversial remarks made by an activist.
The activist had implied that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu could face a fate similar to that of former President Mohamed Ameen Didi, who was overthrown in 1953.
At a press conference held yesterday, Fayyaz addressed comments made during an MDP rally in Kulhudhuffushi, where an activist suggested that recent government policies—such as amendments to tobacco regulations—might lead to consequences akin to the historical ousting of Ameen. Ameen’s presidency ended violently after a mob attacked him over unpopular policies, including changes to tobacco prices.
Fayyaz described the activist’s remarks as cautionary advice, urging the government to learn from history. He warned that mistreatment of the public could lead to similar outcomes, stating, “If you do wrong by the people, then you have to do what was done to Mohamed Ameen.”
The ruling party swiftly condemned Fayyaz’s comments, labelling them inflammatory and irresponsible.
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla accused Fayyaz of inciting terrorism, calling for an investigation. “It is unacceptable for the leader of an opposition party to speak in such a manner,” Abdul Raheem wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan also criticised the remarks. “The Maldives guarantees broad freedom of expression. However, this right should be exercised responsibly. Leaders of political parties and former senior officials must set an example. Calling for violence against the laws is highly irresponsible,” he said.
Meanwhile, tensions are high in Male’ as MDP gears up for a rally in Male’ tonight under the banner “In defense of the constitution” to protest unprecedented changes brought to the constitution last month.
