Over 1,000 Accidents Reported in First Quarter of 2025, Police Reveal

More than 1,000 road accidents were reported in the Maldives during the first three months of 2025, according to newly released police statistics.
The data, covering the period from 1 January to 31 March, shows a total of 1,068 accidents were reported nationwide, with the majority occurring in Malé City. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024, when 831 accidents were recorded. The total number of accidents reported throughout the year was 2,886.

In Malé City, 561 accidents were recorded in the first quarter of this year, broken down as 152 in January, 216 in February, and 193 in March.
No accidents were reported in Hulhumalé Phase 1 during the three-month period. However, Hulhumalé Phase 2 accounted for 454 accidents; 145 in January, 169 in February, and 140 in March. One person sustained serious injuries in an accident reported in February.
In Villimalé, a total of four accidents were reported, with two occurring in January, one in February, and one in March.
Velana International Airport experienced 49 accidents during the same period, with 19 in January, 12 in February, and 18 in March.
Police noted a dramatic rise in the number of serious accidents, highlighting the need for increased road safety awareness and enforcement measures.
